How much space do you need for padel?

A padel court is compact. A padel development is not. Before you can answer how many courts fit on your site, you have to account for court spacing, access, circulation, maintenance, drainage, lighting, safety, spectators, parking, welfare buildings, planning constraints and the condition of the ground you are building on.

How much space should you allow between padel courts?

There is no single universal spacing figure. Courts should not simply be pushed together until they fit — the gaps carry player circulation, maintenance and emergency access, accessibility, spectator movement, drainage runs, lighting columns and the construction access needed to build the courts in the first place.

The current SAPCA Code of Practice notes that where multiple courts are developed, consideration should be given to layout and spacing for safe access, movement and Equality Act compliance. Appropriate spacing depends on your configuration and operating model, so it is a design decision rather than a fixed number.

How much land do I need for a padel development?

There is no honest single figure, because the answer sits at three levels. Two sites with exactly the same area can support completely different numbers of courts.

Indoor conversion can be very attractive where a suitable building already exists — but a large building does not automatically make a good padel venue.

Agricultural buildings, warehouses, industrial units, leisure buildings, sports halls and empty commercial space are all worth testing. The measurements that decide it are usually clear internal height to the lowest obstruction, the column grid and the span.

A real site rarely offers a clean rectangle: boundaries, trees, slopes and buried services all take usable area out of the calculation.

Worked example

Why “I have 2,000m², so I can fit 10 courts” doesn't work

2,000m² ÷ 200m² = 10 courts. Mathematically true, and almost never a viable development. The same site still has to accommodate separation between courts, access, circulation, infrastructure, drainage, parking, buildings, safety, planning requirements and day-to-day operations.

Mathematically five playing areas. Realistically, a compact site of that size is usually looking at a smaller court count plus circulation, with limited room for parking or a building unless those sit elsewhere on the wider site.

How many padel courts can fit on 2,000m²?

2,000 ÷ 200 = 10 on paper. A workable scheme on a regular 50m × 40m plot is typically fewer courts, and the answer changes completely if you also need parking, a clubhouse or a separate service access.

How much space do I need for four padel courts?

A 2 × 2 arrangement is efficient because courts share circulation routes. Beyond the courts themselves you should be planning for a central walkway, lighting columns, drainage runs and somewhere for players to gather.

How much space do I need for six padel courts?

Six courts usually reads as a 3 × 2 arrangement and starts to behave like a club rather than an amenity: welfare facilities, reception, parking and a viewing area become part of the space requirement.

Do padel courts need floodlights?

If you want to operate in UK evenings — which is where most of the revenue sits — yes. Lighting brings its own considerations: columns, power supply, light spill and planning.

Can I build padel courts on an existing sports club site?

Existing tennis, golf, rugby and football clubs are frequently strong padel sites because access, parking and welfare already exist. The constraint is usually which part of the land can be given up and how it affects existing provision.

How many padel courts should I build?

That is a commercial question as much as a spatial one: catchment, utilisation, staffing and operating model all matter. Fitting more courts on a plan does not automatically make a better business.

How do I know whether my land is suitable for padel?
